Komar Rikreay

19 janvier 2011

Welcome

In ten years, Komar Rikreay Cambodia has received and given a second chance to more than six hundred children, girls and boys from two to sixteen years old. Today, thanks to legacy and solid experience, it gives all the necessary guarantees for the accomplishment of it's mission: attending to the vulnerable street children and the child victims of trafficking.

Since the beginning, Komar Rikreay France walked alongside, in the mission of spreading the word and of collecting funds. It is thanks to you, to your confidence and generosity, that the children of Cambodia rewrite a better future. Protection and the education of these children represents an investment for their future and at the same time for that of their country and that of the world! Therefore it is for them, that we ask for your support.

Thank you
RITA PAPAVERO
President of Komar Rikreay in France

Our Work

In order to have a comprehensive approach, KMR has developed 5 main projects:

 1. RECEPTION & REHABILITATION PROJECT

  • KMR provides the children with safe shelter, healthy food, and medical care to satisfy their physiological needs.
  • KMR offers psychosocial services including confidential counseling, art therapy, and group therapy in order to help the children recover from their trauma.
  • In KMR, all the children have access to formal education in public school as well as non formal education and life skills in the center.
  • KMR provides vocational skills training for teenagers over 15 years old in order to help them to have a future sustainable activity in the community.
  • KMR also provides school materials including uniforms and financial support.

2. REINTEGRATION PROJECT

  • When a new child arrives in the centre, KMR’s social workers try to rebuild the child’s story. Each child has access to family tracing and assessment in order to be reintegrated in his or her family when possible.
  • The reintegration will only be implemented if the assessment concludes that the reintegration guarantees the safety and security of the child.
  • Case managers and all partners follow up with the reintegrated children for one year.
  • Their families are involved with KMR program through skills training, family group meetings and assistance for income generating activities.

3. ALTERNATIVE CARE PROJECT

  • KMR established this program in 2004 for children who can’t be reintegrated into their family for reasons such as abandonment, domestic violence, abject poverty, and drug and alcohol issues.
  • KMR looks after foster families in the community. KMR believes that it’s better for the children’s psychological development to live within a community rather than in an institution.

4. OUTREACH PROJECT

  • Many children are working during the day in Battambang town. They collect rubbish, steal or beg for money, and do not have a secure place to sleep. Numerous children are subjected to health and social problems, physical and sexual abuse and drug abuse. In order to help them KMR started this project in 1998.
  • In 2004, KMR began working in three places outside the center: Railway station, Rubbish station, and Psar Nat Market. Another initiative targets street children by sending a mobile team into Battambang town at night.
  • KMR provides them with life skills, formal and informal education through  “School on a Mat” where they learn about hygiene, HIV education, child rights and trafficking prevention.
  • The  children receive health check-ups at the hospital.
  • KMR supports their families through micro loans and school sponsorships to help the family become self sustainable.

5. AGRICULTURE PROJECT

  • Since 2001, KMR has provided agriculture skills to children and families through training in fish raising, mushroom cultivation, organic vegetable growing,  organic animal raising, bio fertilizer and compost. This project is important for children and families to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • KMR provides income generation training in order to improve the economic situations of the families.
  • Since 2003, KMR has secured rice supply with 9 hectares of rice field for food security sustainability.

Our Fight

The Greater Mekong Sub-region is one of the concentrated areas where human trafficking is particularly rampant. In Cambodia, poverty, geographical location, poor law enforcement, lack of economic opportunity, poor infrastructure, and deeply rooted corruption provide an ideal environment for traffickers. As the second largest city in Cambodia, Battambang is located near four highly transited border towns that lead to Thailand. Poverty drives families to migrate in a desperate search for a better life. It also compels children to leave school and work in risky conditions, increasing their vulnerability to human traffickers and sexual predators.

In Battambang, a small community of street children exists. These street children are among the groups most at-risk of abuse, exploitation, and trafficking. They are addicted to sniffing glue and spend most of their time begging from tourists or collecting plastic and metal from the city’s garbage dump which they sell to middlemen and local recycling companies. Many of these children are the sole bread winners for their families.

Child trafficking adversely affects individual children and their communities. It deprives them of an education and a normal childhood, stunting their human potential. It reduces them to a commodity to be used and exploited, in the process disempowering them. It exposes them to conditions that are detrimental to their well-being, sometimes endangering their lives.

Basic interventions such as formal and non-formal education, vocational skills training, alternative and sustainable livelihoods for families could help keep these children safe in their communities and offer a way out of the vicious cycle of poverty.

About Us

KMR is a child protection-focused community-based organization. KMR was founded on 1st of June 1998.  KMR does not serve any political group or party, make profit, or discriminate against any group. It aims to receive children in need of special protection and disadvantaged youth both from trafficking networks and the streets. KMR has the capacity to welcome 65 vulnerable children, both male and female. The age range is from 5 to 18 years old.

In April 2000, on the request from MoSAVY-IOM repatriation and orientation network project, KMR has started to receive trafficked children repatriated from Thailand.

Since November 2000, the children are living in a very new centre which KMR constructed. KMR has five houses for the children's shelter which were finished in 2006.

Since 2003, KMR has secured rice supply with 9 hectares of rice field for food security sustainability.

In addition to the office, KMR owns another building since 2007 dedicated to children's shows, children's activities and vocational training.

Finally, the center also has a games area, 2 henhouses, a pond of 1000m², a garden of 800 m² and 2000m² of orchard used for the family training.

About Cambodia

mapcambodia

The Kingdom of Cambodia, formerly known as Kampuchea is a country in South East Asia with a population of over 14 million people. The kingdom's capital and largest city is Phnom Penh. Cambodia is the successor state of the once powerful Hindu and Buddhist Khmer Empire, which ruled most of the Indochinese Peninsula between the 11th and 14th centuries. A citizen of Cambodia is usually identified as "Cambodian" or "Khmer," though the latter strictly refers to ethnic Khmers. Most Cambodians are Theravada Buddhists of Khmer extraction, but the country also has a substantial number of predominantly Muslim Cham, as well as ethnic Chinese, Vietnamese and small animist hill tribes.

The country borders Thailand to its west and northwest, Laos to its northeast and Vietnam to its east and southeast. In the south it faces the Gulf of Thailand. The geography of Cambodia is dominated by the Mekong River (colloquial Khmer: Tonle Thom or "the great river") and the Tonlé Sap ("the fresh water lake"), an important source of fish. Agriculture has long been the most important sector of the Cambodian economy, with around 59% of the population relying on agriculture for their livelihood (with rice the principal crop).Garments, tourism, and construction are also important.

In 2007, foreign visitors to Angkor Wat numbered more than 4 million. In 2005, oil and natural gas deposits were found beneath Cambodia's territorial waters, and once commercial extraction begins in 2011, the oil revenues could profoundly affect Cambodia's economy.Observers fear much of the revenue could end up in the hands of the political elites if not monitored correctly.
